Happy Father's Day!

Here are some wonderful thoughts on fathers from some well-known (and maybe less-known) people:

“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.”
- Jim Valvano (NBA coach)

“You know... fathers just have a way of putting everything together.”  - Erika Cosby (Bill Cosby’s daughter)

“I'm a father; that's what matters most. Nothing matters more.“  - Gordon Brown (Former British Prime Minister)

"I wasn't anything special as a father. But I loved them and they knew it."  - Sammy Davis Jr. (Actor)

"Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a Dad."  -Anne Geddes (Photographer)

To all of our wonderfully supportive fathers out there, we hope you have the most amazing day. You deserve it!

Celebrating Father's Day as a First-Time Father

By Jason Curtis Last August, I joined an elite group of people numbering about 67.8 million, and later this month I get to celebrate having joined the club. That's right, next Sunday is Father's Day and it will be my first one.  I'm so happy and excited for the day to come. It's not because there are a bunch of activities planned (that I know of), but simply because it's going to happen. I'm going to be a father on Father's Day! I only recently realized that I've been preparing my whole life for this. This hasn't been a conscious preparation - I haven't been taking classes, saving up money, or said "I'm doing this so I can become a dad.” But, I'm now realizing I've been looking forward to being a dad my whole life.  I ask myself, why? Why has this always been what I've been working toward but haven't realized it?  I think it's because of my own dad. I have a great dad! He is so smart, caring, and fun to be with.  I try to be like him every day.  My wife attests to this freq ...

Virgin Orange Margaritas

Since I was technically working while creating these, this is the nonalcoholic version; but you can add tequila or rum to your liking.

You will need:

-Margarita salt

-2 limes

-1 cup orange juice

-1 can of limeade concentrate

-1 Velata Orange Mixable packet

-Ice

Prepare the margarita glasses:

Cut the end off a lime and cut a slit in the lime. Put the edge of the glass into the slit and gently squeeze the lime as you run it around the whole glass.

Pour some of the salt onto a plate and dip the glass into it and then garnish with lime.

Now, these instructions get complicated, so pay attention: Blend all the ingredients together in a blender and pour into the glasses. Cheers!

Velata Sopapillas

Confession: before creating this dish for you, I didn’t know puff pastries existed. My life has forever been changed. Now that I know you can have fluffy, flaky, doughy, sweet goodness in only 15 minutes, I’m in serious trouble.

All you will need for this south-of-the-border sweetness is:

A puff pastry (You can find them in the frozen aisle by pie crusts. Who knew??)

Butter

Cinnamon

Sugar

A little flour

1 bag of Velata chocolate

On a lightly floured cookie sheet, lay a sheet of puff pastry. Brush with melted butter and generously sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Cut into squares using a pizza cutter or knife.

Bake at 400F for 15 minutes. Drizzle with a bag of melted Velata Chocolate.

Looks amazing, right?

Tissue Paper Flowers

I learned how to make these specifically for Cinco de Mayo, and I am SO glad I did. I’m going to make them for all my parties now! They’re perfect as decorations, to top wrapped gifts, as centerpieces, and the list goes on.  You will need: -Scissors -Ruler -Tissue paper -Twist ties Start with 4 sheets of tissue paper stacked and laid out flat. You can use the same color or different colors.  Fold in half Cut one inch off the FOLDED end. It doesn’t have to be exact; you can use the ruler or just eyeball it.  The stack of tissue paper should be about 20 inches long. Cut in half, so it’s 10 inches long.  Now measure and cut 6 inches across. You should now have two stacks of 6X10 inch squares.  Separate into 4 stacks of 4 sheets of tissue paper Take one stack and fold it accordion style.  Fold in half so you get a line in the middle and then make triangle cuts on each side like this: ...
