Get Inspired

Have you ever found the perfect accessory that inspired you to redo a room? Let Scentsy inspire your next room! With so many colors and designs, it's a good place to start for your next project.  I recently organized my craft room and decided to add a little color. My inspiration piece was the Savoy warmer (which was just discontinued in the Fall/Winter catalog). I love the muted orange color with geometric shapes. I first started with fabrics to make various throw pillows for the day bed I have in the room. I wanted it to be a mix of different patterns, colors and textures. Many of the other rooms near my craft room were already decorated in this same color palette, so I tried to find fabrics that incorporated the same colors. I next moved on to storage accessories (this is a big part of the room since it’s mainly for crafts and sewing). I found some great orange cardboard boxes to bring out the inspiration color. It’s still a work in progress; I have an old window wit ...

This Reminds Me Of…

By Alena Shea, Scentsy Fragrance Specialist  The first whiff took me back to when I was about six or seven years old.  I walked into the kitchen to find my mom putting on her coat and grabbing her purse getting ready to leave for work.  She was wearing a long dress; it was black with colorful little flowers speckled throughout the fabric – one of my favorite things to play dress up in. Every time she wore it I asked her to “spin.” I loved to see her turn in circles and watch the bottom of the flowing dress try to keep up with her circular motion, like in the movies. {source} Each time I smell Scentsy’s Cashmere (a discontinued fragrance, but I stocked up during BBMB), it brings back that memory, and I instantly think of my mom.  Makes sense seeing how scent is the strongest memory trigger - a little something I learned from Canadian psychotherapist Kimberly Moffit.  Ms. Moffit expands on scent memory triggers and explains how it works, “There is ...

Safe Holiday Decorating this Season – Go Wickless!

The busy holiday season will be here soon—families and friends will gather to celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas day, Hanukkah, and New Year’s Eve, six holidays surrounded with festivities and fun. Unfortunately, these holidays also mark the six days of the year with the highest number of reported home fires—think Christmas lights, decorative candles, and a roaring fire in the fireplace. There are more home fires in December and January than at any other time during the year. To help you celebrate the holidays safely this year, we are going to feature a few wickless holiday decorating ideas each week now through New Year’s Eve. First off: Halloween!  You don't have to light a candle to decorate with pumpkins; all of these pumpkins are glowing with holiday twinkle lights! {source} {source} {source} Some pumpkins don’t require lights (or real pumpkins!) to be festive: {source} {source} {source} And don ...

Apples to Apples

October has been declared by the U.S. Apple Association as National Apple Month. Apple is a popular fruit that smells great in cooking, home fragrance, and is even used in fine fragrance. You may have noticed Scentsy doesn’t offer many apple scented products with the exception of Baked Apple Pie. Let me explain why. Quality apple notes tend to sit in the top note category of the scent pyramid even though they are a fruit and fruits tend to be middle notes.  This means apple notes are easy to smell in a new bar of wax or in a Slim Tester.  It also means they are diffusive and, when heated, convert quickly to a gaseous state.  So, for 4 to 8 hours, you can easily detect quality apple notes in the air.  But for Scentsy, 4 to 8 hours isn’t long enough.  While we don’t make any specific claims to bar duration (because they can be used in such a wide variety of environments and we have over 80 fragrances), we do test bars to ensure they meet Scentsy product dev ...

Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!

Hi, I’m Paul Klassen, the new Canada Country Manager for Scentsy.  Growing up in British Columbia, I loved this time of year. With the leaves changing colours, you knew the first snowfall was just around the corner.  Today we are celebrating Thanksgiving Day in Canada, and I particularly love this day! We as Canadians celebrate in very similar fashion to Americans.  Celebrations include parades, customary family feasts and a whole lot of turkey!  It is a time for sharing, family reunions and reflections.   We here at Scentsy are especially grateful for our Canadian Consultants who bring the Scentsy spirit and values to the rest of Canada.  As I take an opportunity to reflect on this day, I think how grateful I am to be part of a company whose core values are centered around being thankful. “Contribute more than you take” isn’t just a phrase at Scentsy -- it’s how we run our business. So today, we thank you for your tremendous efforts to pro ...

Come Walk with Us

Scentsy is involved in many events in Idaho’s Treasure Valley, but one of our absolute favorites is coming up: the Treasure Valley Down Syndrome Association’s Buddy Walk on October 8. If you’ve never been involved in a Buddy Walk—they’re held all over the United States—you’re missing out on something special. It’s especially meaningful to many of us here because Down syndrome affects so many members of our Scentsy family—including product designer (and Scentsy blogger!) Julianne Stewart, whose son Devin has Down’s. This year, copywriter Sara Cox—whose older brother has Down syndrome—and videographer Zach Johnson got together to make a new public service announcement  for the Treasure Valley Buddy Walk. I love it because it sums up why we participate and why awareness is so crucial for understanding how this syndrome affects families, especially siblings. If you’re in the Treasure Valley, I hope you decide to participate ...

Some of the World’s Most Inspirational Entrepreneurs

Like all great success stories, Scentsy’s has a humble beginning. True entrepreneurs tend to be cut from the same cloth – often taking risks and running with haphazard opportunities the rest of us would hesitate to try. The founders of Scentsy are no exception and their modest beginning is about as inspiring as it gets. Let’s set the stage…

No, really. That’s the stage, right there! See that big white ocean container on the far left? That is where Scentsy first began its magic. Back in 2004, Orville and Heidi Thompson purchased Scentsy and used this ocean container and small office (the white building hidden behind two trailers) to manufacture and ship Scentsy orders. Not only were Orville (Scentsy CEO) and his wife, Heidi (President), tending to the future of an incredible company that would soon reach a global audience and boast over a billion dollars in revenue in less than ten years, they were also tending livestock on the same land. Those two know how to juggle!

Because Orville and Heidi were also using the land to pasture sheep and other animals, Consultants who visited Scentsy’s first office were sometimes accosted by chickens and other aspects of farm life. The make-shift office was furnished with items incomprehensible to most people – bench seats ripped from an old van and a variety of other discarded furniture. But, like so many diamonds in the rough, Scentsy’s owners were content to bootstrap while they put profits back into their growing company.

By October of 2004, Scentsy had outgrown the farm space and moved the operation to a small office building down the street. Orville continued to use the land for his sheep and the buildings for storage. Today, Consultants visiting Scentsy’s home office can now tour the site and even take pictures in Orville’s office chair!

Nine years later, Scentsy will soon be moving to another new home. Our new headquarters in Meridian, Idaho will be housed in a brand-new, state-of-the-art campus setting - complete with walking paths, a cafeteria, outdoor amphitheater and gym. A far cry from the sweet little ocean container surrounded by sheep, this campus will house all of Scentsy’s Idaho-based employees and operations.

This rags-to-riches story is one that never gets old to hear. It’s inspiring to witness people with such tenacity and faith that they can take the most humble beginning and literally turn it into a piece of history. At Scentsy, we absolutely love hearing about how everyday people turn their lives around with just one opportunity…

Check out some of our other favorite legendary entrepreneurial stories:

-       Anyone a fan of Paul Mitchell shampoo? Founder, John Paul DeJoria first sold his shampoo door-to-door while living out of his car before his company took off!

-       Who hasn’t heard of Ray-Bans and Oakley sunglasses these days? Bet you didn’t know that the billionaire behind those shades, Leonardo Del Vecchio, is a former auto factory worker who grew up in a European orphanage!

-       Ever heard the saying, “Everything Oprah touches turns to gold?” She didn’t have that power until well into her career. Oprah Winfrey actually overcame a childhood of extreme poverty before finding her success.

-       Harry Potter is a household name, right? But, not everyone knows that JK Rowling was recently divorced and on welfare with a dependent child while dreaming up those fabulous stories that would eventually change her life.

What about you? What are some of your favorite rags-to-riches stories? What inspires you when deciding to make that leap toward a better life?
