Summer Travel

Summer is finally here! We are feeling the heat here at Scentsy headquarters in Idaho, but nothing like we experienced in Florida last week. My family and I were able to attend Scenty’s Magical Memories Incentive Trip at Disney World with our wonderful Consultants! It was so fun to meet all the families who worked so hard to get there. Many of you have summer travel plans filling your calendars with the anticipation of fun memories. While you’re out exploring new areas, look for new design inspiration all around you! One thing Disney World does very well is their attention to detail. While in Florida, we stayed at the Polynesian Hotel. The textures, colors and motifs were all reminiscent of a day at an island retreat. Many of these could be used in your own home to add similar color and texture, even if you don’t go with the full island theme.   While touring through the park, I noticed these great sketches and a display of the witch from the movie Enchanted. The drawing ...

Ode to my fragrance

One online dictionary defines “Ode” as “an elaborate poem or expression devoted to the praise of a person, animal, or thing usually composed in an elevated and enthusiastic style”. It’s our human attempt of expressing deep devotion to someone or something. Odes can take on many forms. On a very micro level, an ode can be as simple as one friend telling another, “Try the My Dear Watson scent, I love it.” Odes are also born of experience or relationship. Camu Camu may be the perfect scent for a Friday, or maybe it was the scent that made Mondays bearable, or the visit from the in-laws a little less painful. Whatever the scenario, your favorite scent is there… it has your back and delivers its fragrance unashamedly and tirelessly every time. It’s to these unsung heroes we dedicate Scentsy’s Ode to My Fragrance contest. Now you have a voice, now you can give praise to the silent, unassuming fragrances that do so much good, without asking for anything ...

I can't smell anything!

I love peppermint chewing gum (5: Cobalt by Wrigley to be specific), garlic and chipotle as culinary seasonings, and my current “bring on the summer weather” favorite fine fragrance for Men is Issey Miyake L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme.  So why would you care and why am I opening up my blog with these random personal details you ask?  Great questions. Let me answer them with some storytelling that will hopefully become relevant to you as a fragrance consumer. Many of us have a favorite fine fragrance.  My Grandma Eleanor was particularly fond of rose-based floral fragrances, whether it was soap, home fragrance, or her fine fragrance.  I distinctly remember how “overwhelming” those fragrances could be (though they trigger some great memories).  Grandma wasn’t big on variety in this arena. I’m guessing she had one bottle of perfume, and I’m certain she bought it in bulk sizes.  I can remember wondering whether her nose ...

Scentsy Scholarships

If you’re familiar with Scentsy, you know service is part of our DNA. Our “contribute more than you take” philosophy has been with us from the very start. It’s a way of life that has been passed down from Orville and Heidi Thompson and is now something we consider before making any decision: how will this affect our co-workers and Consultants? How will it affect the community? How are we making life better? It’s never too early to take this message to heart, and that’s something Scentsy encourages. For the past two years, the Scentsy Family Foundation has made scholarships available to students of Scentsy Consultants and employees. The goal of these scholarships isn’t just to relieve the financial burden upon students and their families, but to help students be of more service through education. Each student who applies must demonstrate their ability to give back to the community—to prove that he or she is service-oriented and willing to help others. Students w ...

New Arrivals

Recently there has been a lot of talk around the Scentsy office about how more babies are born during the summer months in North America. It appears that at the home office there is some truth to this because in the last month or so Josh from Finance, Rochelle from Compliance, Selby from Human Resources and most recently Tara Andrus, our very own blogger guru, welcomed the newest addition to their families. Tara’s daughter, Emileen Kerry Andrus, was born on 6/12/11 at 6:36 a.m.  While Tara is on maternity leave, we have a series of guest bloggers lined up, ready to take on the challenge of providing fun insights into what goes on at Scentsy behind the scenes. Stay tuned for some new voices and perspectives, starting next month. Tara will be back in September to resume her role as editor of the Scentsy Blog, or, as she likes to call it, her other baby. In true Scentsy fashion, Tara made sure warm, soothing fragrances were a part of her daughter’s first experiences. T ...

Father's Day

Father’s Day is on Sunday, a time to honor the most important guy in your life with quality time, kind words, and a heartfelt card or gift. If you’re anything like me, the quality time is wonderful, and it takes no time at all to think of several kind words. The gift, however, can be a bit challenging. Once you’ve run through the typical list of appropriate gifts for men—neckties, golf balls, power tools, nachos—it becomes more and more difficult to nail down the item that will really knock dad’s socks off. And no, you shouldn’t buy him new socks.   My dad is the consummate cowboy from the Midwest. A competitive calf roper usually clad in blue jeans and boots, he spends his evenings and weekends out in the barn with the horses or maneuvering his tractor across an endless field. And he actually enjoys the smell of horse manure—no, I’m not kidding. Who knew a guy who worships John Wayne and takes pride in a dirty pickup truck would care about ho ...

Campus Warmers

Hi there! I’m Nikki Ward, a Trends Analyst in Scentsy’s Product Development team. Among other fun things, I get to work closely in the development of our awesome Campus Collection warmers! With Father’s Day quickly approaching, I know many of you will be looking to the Campus Collection as a gift for dad this year, which is a great choice because we currently offer warmers from 54 schools in the U.S. and plan to release more each month. Here at Scentsy’s headquarters, we greatly value your suggestions and I closely monitor your feedback on which warmers you would like to see added to the Campus Collection.  As a University of Nebraska alum and fanatical Cornhusker fan (Go big red!), I can appreciate the passion and support you have for your universities!  I want to take a moment to explain the process of how the warmers in the Campus Collection come to be.  First, we have compiled a comprehensive list of schools to seek licensing for based on numerou ...

Scentsy Warmer v. Tornado

This week we were contacted by Mary, a Scentsy fan in Oklahoma who made a surprising discovery in the midst of a hardship. Here is Mary’s email to us: Hi! I wanted to contact Scentsy concerning something I discovered this last week.  Oklahoma was hit by tornados last week and my family and I participated in clean-up efforts in Cashion, OK. When we arrived on site, all that was left of the home was a foundation and kitchen cabinets. Rubble was strewn everywhere. It looked like a mass pile of debris had been blown up. Three walls of the home had fallen outward onto the ground and one was leaning in on the kitchen area (the house only consisted of 4 walls). Our job was to put things in piles (wood, metal, etc.) and to set aside anything we thought might be salvageable. The largest wall that had fallen out had to be cut into 3 pieces so it could be moved. When they removed the wall from the yard, I began sifting through the rubble. While doing this, I came upon the bottom ...

Fragrance 101: Part A

A few years ago, if someone had asked me whether I preferred synthetic to essential oils, I would have assumed they were discussing the kind of motor oil I used in my car.  Today, the questions of synthetic and essential oils are always fragrance specific.  At Scentsy we use both.  More specifically, Scentsy fragrances typically contain a mixture of natural and synthetic fragrance oils.  The argument that “synthetics aren’t as good as natural (oils)” is, from my perspective, a myth.  There is a laundry list of reasons why, but without synthetic fragrance oils our fragrance options would be highly limited—unless we were comfortable with mass deforestation or the unrestrained use of limited or endangered resources.  Not to mention the financial costs of those resources.  Musk notes are a great example, as “natural” musk oils are not distributed within the fragrance industry as a whole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musk).  If it ...

Inspired by the Outdoors

If your weather has been anything like mine in Boise, we are all still stuck inside! Cold temperatures and rainy days still interfere with plans this time of year. Try to bring elements of nature inside to feel relaxed and calm.  Get inspired by the outdoors! At Scentsy, inspiration comes from many places, including Mother Nature.  Full-size and Mid-size Scentsy Warmers Plug-in Scentsy Warmers  How can you be inspired by the outdoors? Here are some suggestions (photos from www.westelm.com): 1.      Colors from nature – you can never go wrong by taking inspiration from a sunset, beach, forest or flower garden. Neutral tones work great for a clean, fresh backdrop. Add a pop of color for interest – blues are refreshing and calm, yellows are fresh and bright, and greens create balance and stability. 2.      Natural materials – wood, wicker, rattan and jute give texture and contrast to a room. Use baskets for orga ...

Some of the World’s Most Inspirational Entrepreneurs

Like all great success stories, Scentsy’s has a humble beginning. True entrepreneurs tend to be cut from the same cloth – often taking risks and running with haphazard opportunities the rest of us would hesitate to try. The founders of Scentsy are no exception and their modest beginning is about as inspiring as it gets. Let’s set the stage…

No, really. That’s the stage, right there! See that big white ocean container on the far left? That is where Scentsy first began its magic. Back in 2004, Orville and Heidi Thompson purchased Scentsy and used this ocean container and small office (the white building hidden behind two trailers) to manufacture and ship Scentsy orders. Not only were Orville (Scentsy CEO) and his wife, Heidi (President), tending to the future of an incredible company that would soon reach a global audience and boast over a billion dollars in revenue in less than ten years, they were also tending livestock on the same land. Those two know how to juggle!

Because Orville and Heidi were also using the land to pasture sheep and other animals, Consultants who visited Scentsy’s first office were sometimes accosted by chickens and other aspects of farm life. The make-shift office was furnished with items incomprehensible to most people – bench seats ripped from an old van and a variety of other discarded furniture. But, like so many diamonds in the rough, Scentsy’s owners were content to bootstrap while they put profits back into their growing company.

By October of 2004, Scentsy had outgrown the farm space and moved the operation to a small office building down the street. Orville continued to use the land for his sheep and the buildings for storage. Today, Consultants visiting Scentsy’s home office can now tour the site and even take pictures in Orville’s office chair!

Nine years later, Scentsy will soon be moving to another new home. Our new headquarters in Meridian, Idaho will be housed in a brand-new, state-of-the-art campus setting - complete with walking paths, a cafeteria, outdoor amphitheater and gym. A far cry from the sweet little ocean container surrounded by sheep, this campus will house all of Scentsy’s Idaho-based employees and operations.

This rags-to-riches story is one that never gets old to hear. It’s inspiring to witness people with such tenacity and faith that they can take the most humble beginning and literally turn it into a piece of history. At Scentsy, we absolutely love hearing about how everyday people turn their lives around with just one opportunity…

Check out some of our other favorite legendary entrepreneurial stories:

-       Anyone a fan of Paul Mitchell shampoo? Founder, John Paul DeJoria first sold his shampoo door-to-door while living out of his car before his company took off!

-       Who hasn’t heard of Ray-Bans and Oakley sunglasses these days? Bet you didn’t know that the billionaire behind those shades, Leonardo Del Vecchio, is a former auto factory worker who grew up in a European orphanage!

-       Ever heard the saying, “Everything Oprah touches turns to gold?” She didn’t have that power until well into her career. Oprah Winfrey actually overcame a childhood of extreme poverty before finding her success.

-       Harry Potter is a household name, right? But, not everyone knows that JK Rowling was recently divorced and on welfare with a dependent child while dreaming up those fabulous stories that would eventually change her life.

What about you? What are some of your favorite rags-to-riches stories? What inspires you when deciding to make that leap toward a better life?
