Back to School, Scentsy Style

This time of year always fills me with anticipation. It’s been years since the end of August has signaled the start of school for me, but I still get a thrill at seeing fresh new binders and notebooks on shelves or watching the first college football game of the season. It’s a time of transition and fresh starts. We’re transitioning at Scentsy, too—starting Sept. 1, you’ll be able to order from our new Fall/Winter 2011 Catalog. And guess what? It just so happens that we have a ton of great products for students of all ages (and their parents, of course). Fragrance Foam: Protect your kids from common school bugs with Scentsy Fragrance Foam. They’re handy, portable, easy on skin, and come in a variety of kid- and adult-friendly fragrances. Just toss a Scentsy Fragrance Foam into your child’s backpack and cross a required back-to-school item off your to-do list. European Convention Photo Roll

Scentsy’s first-ever European Convention was held in London, England’s Selsdon Park last week—Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19. It was a smashing success, with just under 50 attendees and two days of excitement as Heidi and Orville unveiled our new Region 2 products and shared breaking Scentsy news for Scentsy Europe. Consultants gather for dinner at the Scentsy Convention in South Croydon. After the training, giveaways, and Orville and Heidi’s keynotes, attendees at Scentsy’s European Convention got a good understanding of what Scentsy is all about. Here, UK Consultants share a meal with Heidi and Orville and their daughter, Sarah. Scentsy’s new Region 2 Director, Dan Orchard (far right), and Heidi and Orville enjoy a dinner boat cruise on the Thames with Scentsy Consultants from the U.K.   While in Europe, Heidi, Orville and Traci Heibert, our new German Country Manager, traveled to Germany to personally meet with over 20 German Cons ...

Behind the Scenes of Scentsy’s Seven Seas Video

By Sara Cox After working in the marketing department at Scentsy for almost 10 months now, I’ve learned new projects and ideas pop up around here daily—multi-tasking and switching directions has to be second nature. It seems like we’re constantly sprinting to catch up with Scentsy’s amazing Consultants and growth. I’ve also learned the people I work with on the creative team pull together to produce imaginative, cutting-edge work—and have tons of fun doing it. The last couple months brought insanity to new heights as we all scrambled to prepare and provide an outstanding experience for Consultants who would attend Stampede: Scentsy Convention 2011. I had the pleasure of helping to create the videos designed to entertain, reveal products, and educate Convention attendees. I did some things I never dreamed I’d be doing here at Scentsy, like asking people about the size and shape of their bathrooms, instructing interns to roam the building to see if an ...

The Golden Whisk

By Kim Mora, Social Media Marketer Here at Scentsy, we value fun and a little healthy competition…especially when it involves baked goods and a golden whisk. (The Golden Whisk) It all started with some smack talk from good ol’ Dave Sattler. There we were, elbows deep in a Web Marketing brainstorming session, in need of some inspiration and perhaps a little sugar, when an idea arose to bring treats to our next meeting. Dave was sure he had the best no-bake cookies around. Of course, Ryan Smith, our Interactive Lead, chimed in, convinced his college days had given him the skills to defeat Dave’s cookies. Now, I certainly couldn’t let this go on without jumping in—I can’t ignore a challenge!   After a bit of bantering back-and-forth, it was decided the only way to settle this objectively would be a No Bake Cookie No Bake Off. The news spread quickly of our little challenge and soon we were approached by Tim Hays, our PR intern, who was ready ...

Farewell, Dear Warmer

Every new catalog Scentsy bids adieu to the warmers leaving the lineup to make room for the new warmers. With all the excitement surrounding the new warmers, it’s easy to overlook the legacy of the warmers that are stepping aside for their new counterparts. To recognize these unsung heroes that have been a part of our lives, we give them (actually you on their behalf) an opportunity on the Scentsy Facebook Fan page to say their final farewells. Here are some of the warmer farewells from previous catalogs: _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Well, dyin' ain't much of a livin' but we're burnin' daylight so let's get on with it. I reckon leaving ain't no big thing. - I been told one warmer’s sunset ain't nothin' but another warmer’s dawn. Remember- always drink upstream from the herd and don't ever squat with your spurs on. So now that I'm 10% off for 13 more days I guess you've got to ask yourself ...

Evaluate This

I feel motivated! Scentsy’s 2011 Stampede Convention was my third Convention and what a great experience it turned out to be. Convention has that effect on me, and every year I leave feeling more motivated than the year before.  I was thrilled to meet so many Scentsy Consultants. This year we had somewhere around 4,000 Consultants go through the fragrance evaluation room compared to about 1,400 Consultants in 2010.  The evaluation room is a key step in a lengthy (though enjoyable) process of narrowing down the best fragrances possible for the upcoming Spring/Summer catalog.  In just a few days, we will have tallied all your feedback electronically, and those of you who took the 17 minutes (or so) to join us will have helped decide which fragrances become parts of Scentsy’s fragrance line. Involving Consultants in this process was Heidi’s idea and what a great decision it has proved to be.  Dozens of people are involved in getting those fra ...

Happy National Home Business Month

August is National Home Business Month, and here at Scentsy that’s a cause for celebration—we wouldn’t be anywhere without our more than 110,000 Independent Scentsy Consultants! When Heidi and Orville Thompson launched Scentsy back in 2004, they knew they wanted to make it a direct selling company to give as many people as possible the opportunity to build their own businesses. Over the years we’ve heard amazing stories about how our Consultants found and benefitted from the Scentsy business opportunity. Really amazing stories—we call them “Scentsy Stories,” and you can read them on the websites of many of our Consultants. Every Scentsy Story is unique, but they all seem to have a common thread: If I can do it, you can do it, too. (Orville and Heidi with a group of Superstar Directors at the 2011 Convention)   Scentsy was able to give many people a second chance during a tough economic time, breathing new life and hope into households facing financial har ...

Fine Fragrance With a Twist

The proverbial “cat” is out of the bag! Scentsy Solid Perfume has finally gone public, and those fortunate enough to attend convention will leave with full retail versions of all five fragrances.  Fine fragrance is a new direction for Scentsy—one I am confident will be enjoyed by Consultants and customers alike.  So let’s start with a basic question: What is the difference between “fine” fragrance and “home” fragrance? Fine fragrance is wearable. It is designed with your skin in mind (cosmetic grade). You will have a unique experience using it because your skin will modify the scent in a personal or individual way.  This is largely the result of your skin pH (which is a measurement of acidity vs. alkalinity) interacting with the fine fragrance. Keep in mind, even your shampoo or favorite hand lotion will “layer” to some extent with any fine fragrance you wear.  Home fragrance, on the other hand, such as the oils used in our wax ...

Scentsy Stampede ROARS into Fort Worth

By Jen Pugh, VP, Human Resources  Scentsy Convention 2011 stampeded in with a rumbling ROAR last night, as 10,000 Scentsy Consultants entered downtown Fort Worth for a private concert, held especially for our Consultants at the Stockyards. The evening began with a fresh new country band, Gloriana, and after listening to them perform, it was easy to see why they were named the 2010 Academy of Country Music's Top New Vocal Group. Gloriana’s performance warmed up the crowd and prepared them for Clint Black’s entrance as he set the stage on FIRE and played to the “Silly Scentsy” Consultants (as he called them) for over an hour and a half. (Jen at the Concert, Clint Black seen in the background) I have been to many concerts in my life—from country, rock, alternative to operas and concert halls with amazing classical performances.  But last night was different. There is a distinct energy within a group of Scentsy Consultants and emplo ...

How Do You Store Your Scentsy Fragrance Bars?

By: Alena Shea

The more I learn about fragrance, the more I realize just how many factors can have an effect on fragrance character, duration and performance.  One factor that affects Scentsy bar fragrance is storage.

Here are a few tips on how to properly store your Scentsy bars:

·       Cool & Dark
o   Keep your bars in a cooler area of your home that doesn’t experience heat fluctuation or is exposed to direct sunlight. If you keep your bars in a drawer next to your stove, top notes are at risk of flashing off through residual heat from the stove. If you like to store your bars in a cute basket on a bookshelf that gets direct sunlight for a majority of the day, you risk top notes flashing off from the heat of the sunlight.
o   If you like to stock up on your favorite fragrance, consider the refrigerator or even freezer! I recommend using a zip lock bag for each bar to protect the clamshell from cracking. The cold temperature makes the plastic brittle.

·       First In First Out (FIFO)
o   FIFO is a method used by many companies to manage inventory. If you’re a Consultant who likes to have inventory on hand, or an avid customer who buys bars faster than you can use them, the first bars you purchase should be the first sold or used.  This will help ensure the bar inventory you have doesn’t get old and lose fragrance.  Shelf life on Scentsy bars (that have been stored properly) is 12 months.

·       Vehicles
o   Avoid keeping your Scentsy bars on your car seats with access to sunlight for long periods of time. A car sitting in 70+ degree weather with Scentsy bars and/or testers exposed on the seat is a disaster waiting to happen!

·        **Bonus tip for Consultants:

o   Many Consultants have outdoor booths at fairs & shows. When the temperatures are warm, treat your testers like you treat your bars! I recommend using two sets of testers & bringing a cooler. Keep one set of testers in a cooler & rotate every hour or so to keep the testers nice & cool – keeping those top notes in! And remember, warmer testers have a stronger scent so give them time to acclimate to the temperature when rotating. If your testers are too cold, you will have a hard time smelling the fragrance.

Some of the World’s Most Inspirational Entrepreneurs

Like all great success stories, Scentsy’s has a humble beginning. True entrepreneurs tend to be cut from the same cloth – often taking risks and running with haphazard opportunities the rest of us would hesitate to try. The founders of Scentsy are no exception and their modest beginning is about as inspiring as it gets. Let’s set the stage…

No, really. That’s the stage, right there! See that big white ocean container on the far left? That is where Scentsy first began its magic. Back in 2004, Orville and Heidi Thompson purchased Scentsy and used this ocean container and small office (the white building hidden behind two trailers) to manufacture and ship Scentsy orders. Not only were Orville (Scentsy CEO) and his wife, Heidi (President), tending to the future of an incredible company that would soon reach a global audience and boast over a billion dollars in revenue in less than ten years, they were also tending livestock on the same land. Those two know how to juggle!

Because Orville and Heidi were also using the land to pasture sheep and other animals, Consultants who visited Scentsy’s first office were sometimes accosted by chickens and other aspects of farm life. The make-shift office was furnished with items incomprehensible to most people – bench seats ripped from an old van and a variety of other discarded furniture. But, like so many diamonds in the rough, Scentsy’s owners were content to bootstrap while they put profits back into their growing company.

By October of 2004, Scentsy had outgrown the farm space and moved the operation to a small office building down the street. Orville continued to use the land for his sheep and the buildings for storage. Today, Consultants visiting Scentsy’s home office can now tour the site and even take pictures in Orville’s office chair!

Nine years later, Scentsy will soon be moving to another new home. Our new headquarters in Meridian, Idaho will be housed in a brand-new, state-of-the-art campus setting - complete with walking paths, a cafeteria, outdoor amphitheater and gym. A far cry from the sweet little ocean container surrounded by sheep, this campus will house all of Scentsy’s Idaho-based employees and operations.

This rags-to-riches story is one that never gets old to hear. It’s inspiring to witness people with such tenacity and faith that they can take the most humble beginning and literally turn it into a piece of history. At Scentsy, we absolutely love hearing about how everyday people turn their lives around with just one opportunity…

Check out some of our other favorite legendary entrepreneurial stories:

-       Anyone a fan of Paul Mitchell shampoo? Founder, John Paul DeJoria first sold his shampoo door-to-door while living out of his car before his company took off!

-       Who hasn’t heard of Ray-Bans and Oakley sunglasses these days? Bet you didn’t know that the billionaire behind those shades, Leonardo Del Vecchio, is a former auto factory worker who grew up in a European orphanage!

-       Ever heard the saying, “Everything Oprah touches turns to gold?” She didn’t have that power until well into her career. Oprah Winfrey actually overcame a childhood of extreme poverty before finding her success.

-       Harry Potter is a household name, right? But, not everyone knows that JK Rowling was recently divorced and on welfare with a dependent child while dreaming up those fabulous stories that would eventually change her life.

What about you? What are some of your favorite rags-to-riches stories? What inspires you when deciding to make that leap toward a better life?
