Backyard BBQ? Bring Velata!

By Elizabeth Brady Summertime is in full swing and that means it’s barbeque season! You know: dogs or burgers on the grill, chips and fruits for munching, ice cold soda and fun treats. And around here, any mention of food means Velata isn’t far behind. So, naturally, this thought popped into my mind: “How much of my barbeque can I dip in Velata chocolate?” Turns out the answer is: pretty much all of it! 1. Hot dog source My brain just compartmentalized this one. “Oh, there’s Velata, mmm. And oh, there’s a hot dog!” A mouth full of chocolate just starts an entrée off nicely. Although I must say, I did feel like Miss Piggy dunking a whole hot dog into the suddenly-too-small Velata warmer dish. 2. Fried Chicken You guys… chicken and chocolate; need I say more? Not only does it have a ring to it, now it has a sweet smoothness, too! Salty and sweet makes me weak in the knees. Juicy white chicken bathed in soft brown mil ...

Hope and a Fresh Start

By Susan Rowe This month Scentsy celebrates its 8th birthday—eight amazing years that transformed a tiny candle company whose owners were deep in debt into a thriving, international business with multiple product lines, multiple brands, and millions in revenue. But eight years isn’t that long, and Scentsy’s owners, Heidi and Orville Thompson, have not forgotten those difficult years before success when a little help from friends and strangers gave them hope for a fresh start. Hope and a fresh start is exactly what Duale Mohamoud needed when he arrived in in the United States six years ago at the age of 18. Duale’s family fled war in Ethiopia when he was just a baby, so he has no recollection of his native country. Instead, Duale (pronounced Du-all-ee), spent his growing-up years in a refugee camp in Kenya, a camp he estimates had more than a million people.  He remembers newer arrivals in the camp whose homes consisted of just brush and how those “homes” were washed ...

Inside-Out Velata Strawberries

Since Velata launched in May we’ve heard you chocolate lovers have been getting creative with your dipping! From bacon to jalapenos, is there anything you haven’t dipped in chocolate yet?  It is fun to experiment with dippables, but let’s not forget the classics. Here is a new twist on a classic fondue dippable: the Inside-Out Velata Strawberry. Step one: Cut the green tops off your freshly washed strawberries. We recommend a v-shaped cut to preserve as much of the strawberry as possible. Make certain that you cut deep enough to expose the hollow center of the strawberry. Step two: Use your knife to slightly widen the hole of your strawberry; you’ll want to get as much yummy Velata chocolate in your strawberry as possible! Step three: If you would like your strawberries to stand on their own, cut the tip off each strawberry, giving it a flat surface to balance on. TIP: You can skip this step by using an ice-cube tray, mini-muffin tin, or even an egg carton with a p ...

Instagram Incredibles

We are thrilled that Velata is popping up all over Instagram thanks to our wonderful Consultants and fans who are finding new and unique ways to use our delicious cheese and chocolate. We’ve put together a few of our favorite ideas for you to check out for inspiration!

@jhuffman76 is our hero! She’s always coming up with great ideas to use Velata. This time she used a Mocha Mixable in her cream cheese frosting for these gorgeous cupcakes, and then drizzled Velata Caramel Milk Chocolate on top.

@kristinafreeman says her kids called her “Super Mom” the night she drizzled melted Velata Chocolate Fondue on pound cake for dessert. Seems fitting….

Just when you think mac & cheese can’t get any better, @stitchinscents takes it one step further by using Velata Cheese. Plus, look at all that broccoli…. it’s practically diet food.

@angelface041206 earns her moniker by making homemade Cranberry Bark with Velata White Chocolate. Yummm….

@rockinflameless made homemade Crunch Wrap Supremes with Velata Cheese Fondue. Can we please give this woman a round of applause?

Have you come up with a unique way to use Velata Chocolate or Velata Cheese Fondue? We seriously go nuts over these pictures, so please feel free to share! Use #Velata on Instagram or email them to us at officialvelata@gmail.com

Protect Your Skin with Layers by Scentsy SPF Lotion

By: Yvonne Juarez

Think sun damage doesn't apply to you? Here are some surprising myths about skin protection that'll make you think twice about how you're treating your skin:

I’m only susceptible to sun damage in my bathing suit! Think again…you might be fully dressed, head-to-toe and completely vulnerable to the sun. Lightweight cotton only provides SPF 5 for your skin. That’s practically nothing!
I put sunscreen on this morning…I’m fine until I go to bed. No! Sunscreen can wear off as your skin rubs against clothing, towels or other surfaces, or displaced by sweat, swimming or washing your hands. You should be re-applying every few hours, and some experts recommend as often as every 80-90 minutes. Using a water resistant formula will help preserve your protection, but when in doubt, always re-apply!
- I’m indoors. No need for sunscreen today! Chances are, you’re inside a building loaded with windows, or in a car surrounded by them. The average person spends 9,100 hours commuting to work over their lifetime…just picture your hands sitting on that sunny steering wheel, completely unprotected. And that doesn’t even include all the other hours of driving you’ll do!
I put sunscreen on my face and neck daily. I’m good to go. Nope. Here’s a surprising fact: one of the most common places melanoma is detected is between the toes. Sun goes EVERYWHERE. Your sunscreen should too!

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month which makes this the perfect time to talk about sun care! In March, Layers by Scentsy introduced a line of SPF sun care products: SPF 50 and SPF 15 skin lotion and SPF 15 lip balm - available in fragrances from Scentsy’s tropical line: Havana Cabana and Rio Beach.

We all love putting luxurious lotions on our skin and lips while covering our body in amazing fragrance, but it’s also important to remember how to care for your skin beyond the surface. The skin is your largest organ and should be protected!

But, if you’re anything like me, remembering to apply sunscreen every single day is a challenge. Quite frankly, I forget to do it far too often and am left with this lingering guilt, complete with a little voice in my head that says, “Just do it already!!” Avoid the guilt and start protecting yourself today. Here are four easy-to-follow tips to make it easier to remember (and maybe even enjoyable!):

- Update your after-shower routine! Are you in the habit of slathering regular body lotion all over after a shower? Just swap your regular body lotion for a bottle of good-smelling sunscreen. If you have a product you love, with a fresh scent you look forward to, you might actually enjoy applying it!
- Keep some in your purse for touch-ups throughout the day. Think of it like make-up. You should be equally concerned about re-applying your sunscreen as you are about re-applying your lipstick. Trust me, in 20 years, good sunscreen use will far out-weigh any beauty benefits your lipstick can offer.
Make it accessible for the whole family. Put it in a cute basket by the back door. Put it in your husband’s briefcase or office. Put a bottle in your kids’ diaper bag. Don’t just store it in the medicine cabinet—the more accessible it is, the more you’ll remember to use it!
Beyond sunscreen, wear protective clothing like hats (have you seen the amazing hats Princess Kate has been sporting?), sunglasses and long sleeve shirts. Limit time in the sun, particularly between the harshest hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Remember: all these tips are for year-round, not just summer months! Your skin is still vulnerable throughout winter and even on overcast days, clouds let roughly 30% of UV rays through. Protect yourself!

Layers by Scentsy SPF Lotions offer broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and smell like a perfect tropical vacation to boot. You can wear something that feels good, smells good, and most importantly, does good things for your skin!
