We know a classic when we see it: the timeless silhouette of a ceramic vessel, the traditional texture of fine lace, the graceful curves of craftsman molding.
So, what makes something classic—no matter the industry?
The classic aesthetic isn’t about following strict rules or sticking to a particular historical period. It’s about the difference between chasing trends and investing in ageless pieces. Classic style embraces qualities that transcend time, connecting generations with craft and tradition.
Timeless not trending
The primary characteristic of classic design is timelessness. Trends come in like a roar, demand attention and quickly fade. While any classic design can be of the moment, it must also have serious staying power.
Think of an iconic designer little black dress, a 1969 cherry red American sports car or a diamond engagement ring that comes in a robin’s egg blue box. Even without a brand name attached, these classics are instantly recognizable. Yet it’s their proportions, lines and craftsmanship that keep them as relevant today as when they first were created.
The Indigo Ginger Jar Warmer in our new Classic Collection is inspired by Chinoiserie artistic traditions, yet it doesn’t feel like a museum piece or a modern knockoff. The deep indigo floral motif and recognizable silhouette recall an enduring design. Each bloom is inspired by hand-painted work from artisans at our ceramics factory, creating an authentic story and innate sense of craftsmanship.

Familiar and fresh
There is a paradox at the heart of the classic sensibility. True classic design feels instantly recognizable, but never generic or forgettable. It’s a delicate balance.
For example, lace gives the feel of vintage heirloom linens when used correctly in classic décor. In the wrong context, it evokes Grandma’s doilies, the kind that feel dated and fussy.
The doily effect happens when classic elements are over-styled or cluttered. Sometimes too many decorative details compete for attention, for example layering doilies with lace tablecloths and frilly curtains. Do use lace as a subtle accent and pair with neutral backgrounds and other elements with clean, simple lines.
Our Lace & Light Warmer achieves just the right timeless balance. Real lace is dipped in porcelain glaze, wrapped around the Warmer and kiln fired to create a delicate texture. When illuminated, it creates a warm and inviting ambience.

Simple and intentional
The simplicity of classic design is the result of careful editing, of knowing what to leave out. Every element must earn a place and serve a pragmatic purpose. That’s what allows classic pieces to age gracefully.
A well-designed classic never shouts for attention, it simply works, year after year, without feeling tired or trendy.
Our Petite Ruffle – Cerulean Warmer embodies grace and simplicity. Gently scalloped edges mimic hand-formed pottery, while a cerulean glaze adds a pop of color that feels cheerful and refined. This Warmer is charmingly understated, but still visually interesting while warming your favorite fragrance.

Classic design proves that good taste doesn’t have to keep up with every new trend. It finds what endures, and that’s why we return to it season after season.
