Snail mail is coming back in a big way. In a world where electronic communication is the norm, written letters are more thoughtful than ever. Receiving a written letter is like receiving a gift, especially when there are sentimental surprises in the envelope. Wow your pen pal (or anyone else who deserves a heartfelt message) and increase your letter’s gift-ability with these tips and tricks.
Gather your supplies
First, find cute stationery or decorate plain paper with colorful pens or stickers. Then, get an envelope that will fit your letter and any other flat trinkets you want to send. (Note: If you want to send inflexible or fragile items, it’s a good idea to use a padded envelope.
Write your message
Choose your favorite writing instrument — whether it’s a glittery gel pen or an old-fashioned typewriter — and get writing! What you say is up to you. Reference previous conversations, answer any questions posed in the most recent letter or tell a story. Close the letter with any lingering questions, an inside joke or a request for more correspondence.
Stuff it
Place mementos and small gifts inside the envelope. Photos, drawings, recipe cards, magazine cutouts, stickers, film negatives, pressed flowers, paper doilies and more can slip inside a flat envelope. Items that are slightly thicker than paper will work too, like Scent Circles.
Seal the deal
Address the envelope as normal, then embellish it with washi tape, ornamental ink stamps, wax seals or ribbon (making sure the addresses and postage stamp are visible). If you’re worried your extra-decorative envelope will be damaged, consider placing it inside a second envelope for safekeeping.
Add a final flourish
Who doesn’t love a scented letter? A spritz of perfume or Room Spray will personalize your letter — it’s almost like a long-distance hug to your pen pal!
