Choosing a Mother’s Day gift can be tricky. You’ll find a slew of trinkets and greeting cards at your grocery store, but none of them really express your love for the mothers and mother figures in your life. Maybe that’s why flowers are such popular gifts. A Mother’s Day bouquet represents the beauty of your relationship, symbolizing the love you can’t put into words.
You could grab a premade bouquet from the florist, or you can go a step further by creating your own DIY bouquet. See our steps for custom-making a bouquet, plus some bonus gift ideas!

Pick your flowers
When you’re standing in front of the flower display case, the options can seem overwhelming. Narrow down your selection with these tips:
- Select favorite flowers. Does your recipient have a favorite flower, fragrance or color? (And just as importantly, is there a flower, fragrance or color that she can’t stand?) Build your bouquet using her favorite things as a focal point to show your thoughtful attention.
- Choose two to three statement flowers. Statement flowers grab your attention. They might be large, brightly colored or unusually shaped. Examples include sunflowers, hydrangeas, lilies and peonies.
- Add four to six filler flowers. Filler flowers complement your statement flowers and help fill the vase. These secondary blooms may be less showy, but they’re still lovely. Explore options like carnations, asters and stocks.
- Consider greenery. Greenery increases textural interest and provides a backdrop for standout flowers. Look for options that harmonize with your flowers, like adding delicate ferns to a rose bouquet, or glossy palm leaves to a tropical bunch of flowers.
Scale your selection up or down, depending on the size of your bouquet. A small arrangement made for a dressing table can be just as charming as an exuberant, urn-sized bouquet.
Assemble the bouquet
Before you start arranging, prepare the blooms. Snip each stem so it is a proper length and remove any leaves that will fall below the water level when placed in a vase. Then, be creative with your arrangement! If you’re not sure where to start, begin by placing your statement flowers in the center of the bouquet. Surround it with secondary flowers and add touches of greenery.
Once your flowers are prepped and arranged, cover the cut ends in a damp cloth, then in plastic wrap. Use a rubber band or twist tie to secure the wrappings. Then bundle up the bouquet with paper to protect it and disguise the stem wrappings. You could also write a sweet note on the paper!

Bonus gifts!
Your bouquet is already a gorgeous gift, but for an extra-special touch, pair it with a more enduring gift. Here are some on-theme, unique Mother’s Day gift ideas:
- Vase. Thrift an interesting vase, especially a type that your recipient doesn’t have, such as a bud vase, a shallow vessel or a large porcelain jar.
- Flower frog. These flower arranging tools come in a variety of styles, and they can even be handmade.
- Plant mister. Misters are suited for potted plants rather than cut flowers, but they make practical and decorative gifts, especially for a collector of houseplants.
- Flower press. Once the Mother’s Day bouquet fades, your recipient can capture the blossoms in a flower press — and the memory of your gift will never wilt!
- Fragrance Flower. Scentsy Fragrance Flowers provide beauty and fragrance that lasts up to 60 days. Choose from dozens of popular fragrances, including the colorful blooms available for a limited time in the 2025 Mother’s Day Collection.
