Old Glory ribbon flag
This take on the American flag uses simple ribbons to create a colorful display.
You’ll need:
- Red, white, and blue ribbons (½” width)
- Wooden dowel
- Star stickers (optional)
- Craft glue
- Scissors
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Lighter (optional, for sealing ribbon ends)

Make it:
- Tie ribbon groups to dowel, adding a touch of craft glue to keep them in place.
- Cut six ribbons of each color to equal lengths (about 18″ works well).
- Cut two ribbons of each color in 10″ lengths.
- Group one each of red, white and blue ribbons and tie at ¼” with one 10″ piece. Make six groups of three ribbons.
- Trim the ¼” overhang and 10″ ribbons.
- Add tiny star stickers to the blue ribbons for a finishing touch.
- Optional: Quickly pass ribbon ends through a flame to prevent fraying. Adults only, please.
Sassy felt pennant
This colorful pennant brings playful personality to any space and can be customized with your family’s favorite colors, phrases and patterns.
You’ll need:
- Two 9″ x 11″ felt sheets (choose complementary colors)
- Wooden dowel
- Scissors
- Craft glue
- Ruler
- Pen or marker

Make it:
- Find the center on the short side of your felt piece and mark it. Draw a diagonal line from each corner to the center mark.
- Cut along your outline to create triangle pennant shape.
- Follow the same instructions for the second felt piece, but cut it approximately ¼” smaller on all sides.
- Count the letters in the word(s) you want to put on the pennant and mark felt into equal widths.
- Cut out the letters.
- Lay out the letters on the bottom pennant and then glue in place.
- Glue one side of the dowel and press the pennant edge.
- Get creative! Add your family name, decorative patterns, contrasting stitches or meaningful symbols with fabric markers or felt appliqués!
Pom-topped flag
This whimsical flag brings texture and movement with its adorable yarn pom-pom topper. Looks great in kids’ rooms or in holiday centerpieces.
You’ll need:
- 6″ x 9.25″ piece of fabric (choose something with body, like cotton or canvas)
- Wooden dowel
- Colorful yarn
- Decorative beads or charms
- Small piece of cardboard
- Scissors
- Craft glue

Make it:
- Fold ¼” vertically along the 6″ edge and make a narrow channel along the fold by sewing or using fabric glue.
- Insert your wooden dowel through the channel.
- To make the pom-pom: Cut a 3″ diameter circle from cardboard, then cut a smaller circle in the center.
- Wrap yarn around the cardboard ring until it’s densely covered.
- Carefully cut the yarn along the outer edge of the ring.
- Tie a length of yarn tightly around the middle of the cut strands, securing them together.
- Fluff the yarn to create your pom-pom and trim any uneven ends.
- Glue the pom-pom to the top of your dowel.
- Add beads or charms to strings of yarn, then attach them to the bottom of your flag for extra flair.
