Ask a Consultant: What does it mean to run a Scentsy Business? (Part 2)

Consultants at SFR 2019 talking while standing around a table

Are you thinking about becoming a Scentsy Consultant?

Maybe you just joined, but still have a few questions. Or perhaps you’ve been a Consultant for a long time, but a good friend asked some difficult questions you’re not quite sure how to answer.

Are you thinking about becoming a Scentsy Consultant?

We’re here to help!

The Scentsy community is full of just about the best, most encouraging and most supportive people you’re ever gonna meet: Scentsy Consultants. And when it comes to all things Scentsy, especially what it means to sell Scentsy products and build a team, our Consultants know best.

We rounded up several Scentsy business questions and posed them to our Consultant leaders. There were so many amazing answers that we had to split this post into two parts!

What should I say to my friend who thinks Scentsy is a pyramid scheme?

“Pyramid schemes are illegal and are based solely upon people signing up under each other, with zero product ever changing hands. Scentsy is a respected member of the Direct Selling Association, and as Consultants, the majority of our commission comes from selling actual product to customers.”

“Scentsy is just another way to market products, but it comes with a personal touch! You get to recommend products that you have experience with and personally help answer questions and provide customer support. As you decide to grow a team and help them succeed, you get paid for it through leadership bonuses.”

“Scentsy has a tangible product. We only get paid when we work.”

“We could have chosen to put our products on store shelves, but instead we chose to put it in the hands of the people that use it. Advertising is expensive, so instead of paying advertising companies to market our products to sit on shelves, Scentsy pays us, real people, to do the marketing. It’s smart business.”

Do real people actually earn Scentsy incentive trips, or are they out of reach for average Consultants?†

“Yes! Real people really do earn them, but not without some focus and intent.”

“Let me show you my photos.”

“I’m as average as they come, and I’ve earned four all-expenses-paid trips so far!”

“I’m real. I have currently earned eight trips since Feb. 2012. Scentsy’s incentive trip qualifications are not exclusive — Consultants at all levels have the same chance to earn a trip.”

“This is my favorite question. All levels of Consultants earn our trips. In fact, it’s easier for newer Consultants to earn than for more established Consultants. As someone who has earned 14, I can tell you that you deserve to vacation the Scentsy way!”

“You’d actually be surprised to see how many brand new Consultants earn them!”

How do you keep yourself from spending your entire commission on Scentsy Bars?

“Spend money on Scentsy Bars? Ohhhhh no, I get those free. :)”

“I host my own party every month and get free and half-off items!”

“That would be a lot of Scentsy Bars!! I host my own party each month, so not only do I earn profit, I get my personal-use Scentsy products free and half off with Host benefits. No need to spend my paycheck!”

“You earn them free! That’s it! Our CEO always says, ‘Never spend family money on Scentsy, spend Scentsy money on family.’”

Is Scentsy a hobby or a business to you? Why?

“Both. It started as a hobby and I quickly saw the business potential. It changed my life by becoming my business and still fills my hobby cup, too.”

“It’s a business to me, but didn’t start off that way. It can be as much or as little as you want. That’s completely up to you.”

“Both! It depends on what’s going on in my life. I love that flexibility!!”

“It’s a business! I only joined for the kit, discount and tax write-off, but boy did Scentsy have other plans for us! And now it’s our life!”

“It’s neither! It’s my way of life. It’s where I am meant to be and what I’m meant to do.”

My spouse thinks joining Scentsy is a waste of time. How do I convince them it’s worth the investment?

“You don’t convince them, you show them. One of my favorite quotes is, ‘The person who says it can’t be done shouldn’t interrupt the person doing it.’”

“You have to know it’s worth it before you try to convince anyone else, including your spouse.”

“The cost of the investment is less than the value of the kit. It’s a no-risk investment. If you try it and you don’t like it, there’s no loss.”

“If it’s something you love and are passionate about, show them that. Let them know how much this means to you.”

“Earn your first incentive trip and take them along!”

How do you find time to sell Scentsy on top of life and everything else?

“The easy answer is, you make time for what’s important. Securing my daughter’s future is an extremely important aspect of my life.”

“It’s never a time problem. It’s always a priority problem. You always have time for what is a priority to you. I am successful because I work toward it.”

“You make time. If it’s important to you, you will.”

“Scentsy is a family affair for us. Everyone helps Mom. It is just a part of our life.”

“If you have time to scroll on social media, you have time to work your business!”

“Make time. Even 15 minutes a day, five days a week. Consistency, not quantity of time, makes the difference.”
