Summer is winding down, and though we might miss those lazy summer days, we also welcome fall with open arms! What’s not to love about this warm and cozy season? Comfort foods, thick sweaters, harvest hayrides, football games and, of course, that fantastic display of colorful foliage. Let’s follow suit with Mother Nature and transition our homes into autumn sanctuaries using these fall décor tips.
Handmade in the shade
Fall is nostalgic, cozy and familiar — and your fall home décor can capture the same qualities. Homemade décor has a cottagecore charm (plus, it hearkens back to our school days of making hand-shaped turkeys!). But you can class up your arts and crafts with these ideas:
Pumpkin leaf garland
Customize your fall foliage by making your own leaf garland. Use the template below to cut out paper leaves, then use wire, glue or tape to attach the leaves to twine or floral wire. Drape the garland however you like — perhaps give the impression that the leaves are blowing in the wind!
Paper bats
These classic silhouettes are instantly recognizable and super easy to make. Cut black, brown or purple construction paper into bat shapes, using our photos as a guide. Then, place your paper cutouts in fun locations, perhaps hanging upside down beneath picture frames, or “exploding” out of a fireplace. Use different sizes of bats to lend perspective, and get creative with it!
Come on in
When chilly weather drives everyone indoors, your home plays host to impromptu movie viewings, game nights, potlucks and after-school get-togethers. So, make your houseguests feel welcome with your entry décor. Swap your doormat for a more seasonal option, decorate with pumpkins and gourds, or hang a wreath. Inside, create a convenient place for visitors to leave their heavy layers, whether with wall hooks or a hall tree. (You can also add a cheeky touch to your coatrack by hanging up a witch’s hat.)
Layers on layers
Everyone knows that the secret to autumn fashion is layers. And interior design is no different! Piling pillows, layering rugs and draping blankets are easy ways to add depth and warmth. Chunky knitted materials lend soft and homey texture.
In key areas where space might be at a premium, like mantels and entry tables, create depth by varying the height of décor. Use books or decorative boxes as risers, if needed. To add fragrance to those narrow spaces, try the Happy Jack Tabletop Fan Diffuser or a Scentsy Mini Warmer with a Tabletop Base.
Nooks and crannies
Fall is hibernation season, so naturally we want to retreat to cozy corners to relax and nestle in. Get those corners ready by adding a favorite quilt, a coaster for your mug and a lamp for reading or writing in a journal. And for the finishing touch of fragrance that’s also soothing and oh-so-cute, try the Lumina Pumpkin Darling Décor.
