Right now, in this moment, maybe you feel more “blah” than bold. We get it! But tough times call for fresh perspectives.
The good news …
You can choose to turn a negative situation into an opportunity for personal growth, whether it’s for your health and wellness, your relationships — yes, even from a distance! — or your goals. For now, let’s focus on that last one.
What is a goal?
It’s the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. Or consider this alternate definition (which we love): a goal is the destination of a journey.
Without romanticizing it too much, let’s say life is a journey. Ups, downs and everything in between, with a beginning, a middle and an end. And if the goal is your destination, you can’t actually be living and breathing without one — ever think of that? Whether you’re actively working toward something in the distance or just going about your day, you are heading for a destination. You’re moving toward a goal.
Instead of trying to figure out your big, scary life goal today, why not focus on something more relevant for your here and now? Try setting a goal for the month instead.
At the end of April, just as spring really starts kicking in, where do you want to be personally? What do you want to accomplish? What can you learn to improve yourself? How can you be a better parent, spouse, employee or citizen?
What one thing can you do over the course of the next 30 days to be a better you?
Don’t spend days or weeks thinking about it. Odds are, you already know where you should shore up your talents, skills or relationships. Start there.
Once you have a destination in mind, get there by being B-O-L-D:
B = Bet on yourself.
You are capable of more.
Feelings are great, but you can’t always trust them. Instead of relying on how you feel, choose to trust yourself on a deeper level — then ignore those negative thoughts or queasy feelings that try and talk you out of it. Use the information in front of you, rely on what you’ve learned from personal experience and take the bet that you can and you will achieve great things.
O = Organize your life.
You deserve a clutter-free space, a simplified calendar and a clear head.
It takes tools and space — physical and mental — to achieve new things, and if your home office is littered with craft projects, your kids’ schoolwork and the three loads of laundry you still need to put away, it probably won’t inspire you to accomplish much. Take some time to organize the world around you, free up some time on your calendar and begin your new journey with a clear and focused head.
L = Let yourself recharge.
You need rest to be your best.
Every second of every day doesn’t need to be productively moving you toward your goal. It’s an impossible expectation, and one that will cause you to burn out — fast. Instead, try to balance those steps with plenty of rest and rumination, downtime with family and tasks that use a completely different part of your brain, like cooking, playing music, making a photo album or cleaning house. Sometimes stepping away from a goal inspires new ideas or the motivation you need to achieve it!
D = Do something new!
You can do hard things.
We’re living in uncertain times, but they won’t last forever. What can you do for yourself and your family now that can make all your lives better later?
