Make your comfort zone bigger

When someone mentions the comfort zone, it’s not usually a positive thing.

It’s treated like an unfortunate boundary, something that holds you back from your true potential. Or it’s referenced more literally, like that perfect groove worn in to your spot on the couch from watching “too much” TV.

“Ditch your comfort zone!” they say. “There’s a difference between existing and really living!”

But who decided that being comfortable is bad? That’s like saying sweatpants are bad. Or calling fluffy down comforters bad. It’s kind of ridiculous, if you stop and think about it. Why would anyone want to permanently leave their comfort zone and be uncomfortable all the time?

Yes, life is full of adventure, excitement, promise and possibility if we go looking for it. No, you’re probably not going to find all that on the couch. But you do need a safe space to land at the end of the day. Your comfort zone can also be where you mentally recharge and find your center. Where you snuggle up with the people you love. Where you feel most at home — and most like yourself.

That’s why the goal shouldn’t be to leave your comfort zone behind.

Just work on making it bigger!

Here’s Why:

If your personal comfort zone is what you know, where you spend your time, what you do and who you interact with, then broadening it means you need to learn, explore new places, try new things and meet new people. It doesn’t mean you must abandon your favorite coffee shop or start ignoring the people you love. It just encourages a bit of stretching, so you can get more out of life.

There are lots of reasons why you might be hesitant to try something new. Fear is a biggie. Maybe it’s a lack of trust or faith. Or you could just simply be moving from day to day, stuck in a routine you don’t even know exists.

You won’t know what you’re missing until you find it! So, now’s the time to start looking.

Here’s How:

Like snowflakes or fingerprints, no two comfort zones look exactly alike. Our individual strengths and preferences are developed over an entire lifetime of experiences, relationships, successes and belly flops. For some, just venturing out and trying a new restaurant is totally uncomfortable. Others might only be able to start with a different item on the menu — at their regular dinner spot.

Only you can decide where your comfort zone lands, and only you can choose how to stretch it. But here are a few ideas to help you get started:

  • Try saying yes to an invitation or opportunity, even when you don’t feel like it.
  • Relinquish a bit of control and see where it leads.
  • Start a new hobby you’ve always wanted to try.
  • Take a class — even if it’s just Cardio Pump at the gym.
  • Throw a party and tell your friends to bring people you don’t know.
  • Explore new job opportunities, or start your own side business.

Expanding your comfort zone doesn’t have to be a running leap into the great unknown. Just be curious! Explore what’s out there. Be open to something new. Make memories.

Before long, you’ll be comfortable in new places, doing new things with different people. Your comfort zone will grow, and you’ll grow along with it.
