Love it or dread it, the time for New Year’s resolutions is fast approaching. For some, the excitement of a fresh year provides exactly the confidence boost needed to make a change and stick to it. But for the rest of us, carrying that enthusiasm past January can be a real challenge. Here are some tips to make your resolutions stick.
Take it one step at a time
It can be tempting to set grandiose goals for yourself — who doesn’t want to wow friends and family with an amazing achievement? But the truth is, lofty resolutions often set us up for failure if they are ill-defined. This isn’t to say that you can’t shoot for the moon, but it helps if you break up your goals into smaller steps to track your progress and keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed.
Put a positive spin on it
As reported by CNN, researchers in Sweden suggest that the path to a successful resolution starts with how you word it. According to their study, 12% more of participants who had positively framed resolutions, such as “I will read more,” stuck to their goal compared to those that had more negative wording, like “I won’t watch as much TV.” Set yourself up for success by choosing a goal that looks on the bright side. Rather than asking yourself what you should quit, reduce or stop doing in the coming year, think about what you can start, boost or pick back up!
Get a little help from your friends
As the old saying goes, “many hands make light work.” If you’ve struggled to stick with past resolutions on your own, consider making it a group effort! Talk to your friends and family to see if they have similar goals for themselves and plan to work toward them together. Even just having loved ones cheer you on from the sidelines can provide you with a huge boost of motivation!
