Your holiday pet safety guide

We call it the most wonderful time of the year, but for pets it can be stressful, confusing or even dangerous. Most pets are creatures of habit — when they eat, where they rest, when they play or need to go outside. Then we add holiday chaos to their worlds in the form of decorations, a steady stream of new people coming and going, and all sorts of interesting foods to sniff. So much holiday spirit can put them off their game.

Keep your pets happy and safe all season long with these simple tips:

Deck your halls with care

The holiday season comes with new décor that could spark your pet’s curiosity — the Christmas tree alone is a big draw! Bright strings of lights, shiny ornaments, irreplaceable family keepsakes and baubles … it’s enough to put even the best-behaved pup in the doghouse. To keep your home looking great and your pets completely safe, hang wires and garland out of reach, only use shatter-proof ornaments at the base of your tree, hang smaller choking hazards way up high and keep an eye on your kitty, who may be tempted to climb.

Watch what they eat and drink

Be wary of offering your pets scraps from the dinner table: Poultry bones are choking hazards, fatty trimmings can be hard on their stomachs, and most desserts — especially chocolate — are a big no-no. And while it may seem like no big deal for your dog to steal a drink from the tree stand, there are often added chemicals to keep your tree alive that can be poisonous to your pet.

If it’s just too hard to resist giving them a special holiday treat, get one they can digest! Most pet stores have fun, holiday-themed toys and snacks for your dog or cat to enjoy safely.

Offer them a safe, quiet place to hide

Most pets get overexcited or even a little anxious when the house fills with guests. If they have a bed or crate, stash it in a back room and offer them a peaceful retreat from the crowd, especially during lively parties. Treat them to a new toy to keep them busy while they wait for the festivities to end. It will protect their sanity — and all the delicious food on your dinner table!
