We all have that friend. The one who always looks so polished and knows just what to say. She never seems unsure or out of place. Everything about her is poised and fearless. She’s confident and it shows!
It’s easy to think some people are just born with it, that level of gumption and spirit. But confidence isn’t born, it’s built! We just have to be willing to put in a little elbow grease to bring it out.
Here are four surefire methods for building and keeping confidence:
Know your stuff
Remember in school when you had to get up in front of the whole class to talk about Gulliver’s Travels or solve a complicated math problem on the board? Remember the panic, the sweat, the shaky voice, your mind going blank?
In moments like these, when we’re so far out of our comfort zone we can’t even see it anymore, the only thing that really takes the edge off is being prepared.
Making a presentation? Rehearse it in front of the mirror. Selling products? Study the details and features of every single one, so when the question is asked, you’re ready for it. Don’t know the answer? Don’t panic or sweat — go find it!
Knowledge breeds confidence, so learn and grow to feel sure on the stage.
Practice makes perfect the best you
Perfection is not the goal here AT ALL. Being real is where it’s at! People will be much more receptive to your authentic self. Forget trying to be who you think you should be, and go with who you are. There’s true power in embracing your natural strengths and celebrating what you do best.
“Confidence is created by the small things you do every single day that build trust in yourself.” — Mel Robbins
That said, your strengths can (and should!) be sharpened now and then. You can be yourself and better yourself, too. Commit to doing one thing every day that builds your skills or know-how, and those small steps will help transform you into the best you.
Strut your stuff
True confidence might come from within, but who doesn’t hold her chin a bit higher when she’s wearing her favorite outfit?
“Show up in every single moment like you’re meant to be there.” — Marie Forleo
It’s not cheating to look the part! Wear what makes you feel like a million bucks, whether it’s heels and pearls or jeans and flip-flops, then get ready to own the room.
Find inspiration
In a great story, an impactful quote, a winning song, a faithful friend. Inspiration is all around, and it doesn’t have to be earth-shattering to mean something, improve your mood or change your heart. Set your sights each morning on being inspired, and you’ll find something inspiring!
Now we want to hear from you — how do you build confidence in yourself?
